The UK Banned Flavored and Menthol Cigarettes Starting May 20, 2020
From May 20, 2020 the sale of tobacco products that contains flavorings, including menthol cigarettes, are banned in the European Union and the UK. The ban is a result of the European Union’s Tobacco Products Directive.
Why are Menthol Cigarettes Being Banned in the UK?
The European Union’s Tobacco Products Directive is part of a wider campaign to deter people and minors from taking up smoking. The UK leaving the European Union does not affect the enactment of the ban. Retailers will not be able to sell any products with “a filter paper, package, capsule or other component containing flavorings.”
Does the Ban Apply to other Cigarette Alternatives?
The ban only applies to cigarettes, menthol capsule cigarettes and menthol flavor hand rolling tobacco. The new law does not ban e-cigarette devices or limit flavor options for e-cigarettes.
